Baja Beer Fest 2012

Este 24 de Marzo se celebro el segundo Baja Beer Fest en la ciudad de Ensenada       Baja California. Organizado por la Asociación de Cervezas Artesanales de Baja California (ACABC) que dio cita a más de 45 Cervecerías del estado y más de tres mil personas en el Centro de Convenciones de dicha ciudad antes Hotel Riviera con el propósito de educar paladares y darse a conocer, no solo como cervecerías individuales sino como todo un movimiento en conjunto que busca el apoyo del sector privado y del gobierno en esta revolución artesanal.

El Festival contó con la participación de John Palmer autor del libro “How to Brew” y un icono en California del arte de la cerveza. Su estilo de cerveza favorita en el festival fueron las Black IPA; “En especial las de Zombie, creo que así se llaman” nos dijo Palmer, también agrego que “Este año hay mejores cervezas que el año anterior, me gusta el entusiasmo que tiene la gente aqui.” Le mencionamos que muchas de las cervecerías apenas están en sus inicios así como el movimiento en la región, el opinó que “la mayoría de estas cervecerías es lo que llamamos en Estados Unidos una nano cervecería” y concluimos en que precisamente ese es el proposito de los festivales. Lo notamos muy contento, amigable, una persona sencilla y muy conocedora.

Cervezas y más cervezas en todos lados, de trigo, lámbicas, browns, IPAs, piensa en un estilo y ahí estaba. Es muy difícil degustar todas y cada una de ellas, así que preguntando y comparando, sacamos una breve lista de las mejores cervezas en el Festival (en ningún orden en particular) de acuerdo a los asistentes.

1.- 8 Bit Brewers, IPA. Perfecta combinación de lúpulos, amargor duradero en el paladar, y maltas medianamente tostadas.para acompañar alimentos con especias, como Thai, curry y hasta Mexicana enchilosita.                                        2.- Baja Malibu, Brown Porter. Buenísima, cheve de cuerpo completo, balanceada con una generosa cantidad de maltas, y gasificada con nitrógeno para darle una textura suave y cremosa con una espuma hasta el ultimo trago.

3.-Zombie, English IPA. _Después de la recomendación de Palmer tenia que probarla. Me gusto aunque no sentí los 95 IBUs que decía, probablemente por que estaba bastante balanceada con maltas. pero sin duda una muy buena English IPA.

4.- Fauna, Strong Belgian. _Recomendada por el futuro Importador de cerveza Arthur Quintanal. Muy buena, acaramelada y definitivamente fuerte, aroma floral y notas de frutas. Muy buena belga, muy similar a la Libertina de Monastika que es de mis favoritas cervezas de la Baja.

El Baja Beer Fest fue todo un éxito. Encontré fusiones muy interesantes como la Old Mission Tamarindo Ale y Ave Fénix Ale de Fresa y Albaca. Había también proyectos muy buenos como Cervecería El Sauzal que hace Pan de cebada, una gran alternativa para todo el grano que sobra. Lo que mas me agrado fue la creciente popularidad de Black

Pulpo para botanear.

IPAs como las de Insurgente, Zombie y Fauna, muy buenas las tres, habrá que degustar las tres juntas para una mejor apreciación. Como ya había mencionado estuvo presente John Palmer y además Jose Melquiades Maestro Cervecero de Cucapá y en entretenimiento musical amenizo Technicolor Fabrics una banda de indie rock Tapatía.

Last Saturday the second annual Baja Beer Fest organized by the Craft Beer Association of Baja California (ACABC) took place in the city of Ensenada. In this beer festival more than 45 local breweries and three thousand people attended the event at the Convention Center. The main purpose was to change the Mexican pallet and introduce new styles to the inexperienced, also to get known not as an individual brewery but as a whole movement of breweries in look for support from costumers, potential clients and government, to push this craft beer revolution.

The biggest Baja beer event had the honor to have John Palmer as a guest, author of the book “How to Brew” and an icon in California on the art of brewing. He’s favorite style at the festival were the Black IPAs “Specially Zombie I think it’s called” he said. Palmer also declared “ this time I had better beer than last year, I also like the enthusiasm of the people here” We explained to him how many of the brewers were just starting, as well as the whole craft scene in Baja, he responded “ that’s what in the US we call nano-breweries.” We could tell he was enjoying the festival. It was an honor to meet John Palmer.

Beer and beer everywhere, Wheat, Lambics, IPAs, Browns, almost any style you could think of was there. It is very difficult to try every beer in an event of this magnitude, so we asked around, compared some beers, and came out with this short list of what we think were the best brews of the festival, according to the attendees.

1.- 8 Bit Brewers, IPA. _Perfect combination of hops, lasting bitterness, and mediumly toasted malts. Good for pairing with Thai curry and even spicy Mexican food.

Malibu Pale Ale

2.- Baja Malibu, Brown Porter. _ Really good brew, full body, balanced with a generous amount of malts. Carbonated with nitrogen to make its foam long lasting with a smooth  and creamy texture.

3.-Zombie, English IPA. _After Palmer mentioning it I had to try it for myself. I liked it a lot, it didn’t felt like the 95 IBUs it claimed to have, maybe it was well balanced, anyhow it was a really good and enjoyable English  IPA

4.- Fauna, Strong Belgian. Recommended by the soon to be Mexican beer importer Arthur Quintanal. I could taste caramel flavor. Hints of floral and fruity smell and at the first zip a good touch of alcohol. I found it very similar to Monastika’s La Libertina, one of my favorite brews of Baja.

The Baja Beer Fest was a total success. I found many interesting things like flavor fusions I was not used to like Old Mission’s Tamarindo Ale or the Strawberry Basil Ale of Ave Fénix. El Sauzal Brewery was making spent grain bread, and what I liked most was The Black IPA trend that Insurgente Zombie and Fauna are all in, I’m going to have to taste them together for a better appreciation. As I mentioned before John Palmer and Jose Melquiades Brew Master of Cucapá were the event celebrities and Technicolor Fabrics a Méxican indie band from Guadalajara was there to put a soundtrack to the festival.
